I selected this book to refresh my knowledge regarding the 17th and 18th Century's Age of Elightenment. The Enlightenment was arguably the single most important era in human history because of its influnce on the development of the modern world, but also as the impetus of the American Revolution and its philosophies that served as the blue print for the Declaration of Independence, as well as our Constitution. The Enlightenment was at its heart an attack on the Status Quo. Europe for nearly 1000 years was locked in a strangle hold of superstition, ignorance, and intolerence by a corrupt governing regieme of Church, Monarcy, and Aristocracy that controlled 98% of the wealth and land. Prior to the Enlightenment control of the masses was based on the notion that any idea or movement against any one of the ruling three was an attack on all three and would result in a swift a severly bloody reaction. However, in the wake of the Rennasance, and the over 100 years of bloddy warfare that accompanied the Christian Reformation there appeared in the early 17th Century an era of guarded tollerence that the Enlightenment thinkers and writters kick wide open. Enlightenment thought is based on the idea that all human beings share the same basic needs and as such should enjoy the same rights and privileges. Enlightenment philosophers believed that human reason, rationality, and benevolence would lead to the natural progression of society and the betterment of life on Earth. Intellectually, the Enlightenment gave birth to the disciplines of political science, economic theory, anthropology, sociology, and modern philosophy; those disciplines that we still use to attempt to understand life in the 21st century. While, as the aurhor points out, there were down sides to the Enlightenment most of them were derived as a result of either humans desiring to be free right now which led to the excesses of the French Revolution, or human greed, men taking advantage of their fellow man in order to acquire wealth, which led to colonization and even slavery. In spite of these downsides I remain a believer in the Enlightenment Ideals of freedom, liberty, equality for all, and representative government.I enjoyed this book very much! I encourage everyone to read this book, in order to refresch their memory regarding the rights and freedoms this country was founded upon. It is my heart filled wish that everyone in the world could read this book as a beginning to understanding what that rights of all human beings mean!!!!.
